Treating diseases with Stem Cell

Alejandra Buendía

Monterrey, Mexico (April 23rd, 2014).- Stem cells are already being used in Monterrey to treat diseases such as autism, Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, and diabetic foot.

This is the main business of Bioss Células Madre, a center that emerged in 2010 with an investment of $5 million dollars in 8 laboratories and a bank with a capacity for 9000 reserves.

“We are the only private enterprise in our City that handles the concept of stem cell treatments approved by the Cofepris”, said Óscar Olivares, managing director and partner at Bioss.

Bioss administrates more than 112 procedures to national and foreign patients against diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, knee osteoarthritis, pulmonary fibrosis and disc herniation.

“These patients are already under some medical treatment for their condition; this (the stem cell treatment) is an adjuvant treatment,” explained hematologist Roxana Saldaña, director of the treatment department.

Bioss plans to close the year with 160 stem cell implants against diseases, an increase of 128 percent compared to 2013.

“We have two research protocols with 40 patients in each,” Olivares said.

“One of them is for the revascularization of veins in order to prevent diabetic foot amputation; actually we have already performed four private treatments, and the other one is to regenerate the spine of paraplegics due to an accident.”

The Angeles Hospital in Mexico City is the only national private competitor of Bioss, said the manager, because the others are in the United States, with costs 25 to 30 percent higher.

The company declined to reveal their prices.

Against muscle and joint ailments such as tendonitis and facet arthrosis, Bioss -which employs 23 people- has applied 250 platelet-rich plasma treatments.

This technique consists in obtaining a blood sample and concentrating three to four times the amount of platelets to re-inject them in the damaged area.

In the cosmetic area, Bioss has managed 280 facial rejuvenation treatments by injecting the patient’s own stem cells.

Also, they have 2,400 reserves preserved in their bank, 1,900 from babies’ umbilical cords and 500 from young adults’ bone marrows; the costs are 37,500 pesos plus 108 pesos a month.

“We know it is a long term business, I can assure you that in 12 years the word stem cell will be very common in treatments and there will be 20 or 30 companies like Bioss,” said Olivares.
